A six-week hand building course exploring functional ceramics through a variety of mug-building techniques.

This beginner-friendly course dives deep into the art of handmade mugs while introducing students to essential ceramic hand building methods and surface decoration techniques. Throughout the session, students will create a collection of unique functional ware including espresso mugs, coil-built mugs, slab mugs, travel mugs, and altered form mugs.

Students will learn pinch, coil, and slab construction methods while exploring texture, sgraffito, slip transfer, slip trailing, darting, and wax resist techniques. The course also covers important functional design concepts including ergonomics, lip design, handles, feet, balance, and how form impacts the drinking experience.

Along the way, students will gain hands-on experience using studio tools including slab rollers, templates, extruders, texture tools, and glazing materials. Demonstrations will cover scoring and slipping, reinforcing seams, pulling handles, refining forms, creating surface patterns, and embracing the beauty of handmade imperfections.

The final week focuses on glazing techniques including dipping, layering, wax resist, and decorative glazing approaches using studio glazes and Stroke & Coat finishes.

By the end of the course, students will leave with a diverse collection of finished mugs and a strong foundation in functional ceramic design, construction, and surface decoration techniques.
